Giles knew she would have questions for him. This just wasn’t the one he was expecting. He expected questions like “Why weren’t you wearing your glasses?” or “What did you do with my mother?” He wasn’t prepared to answer questions about his earring, but Buffy had asked. He felt obligated to tell her, no matter how much it would hurt.
Giles sat down at the table in the library. “It’s a long story, Buffy. I suggest you sit.”
He waited for Buffy to sit down and get comfortable before speaking again. “The earring was a gift from Emily, my first slayer. Actually, she was the only slayer I watched over before you. She left the earring to me before she died, asking that I wear it occasionally.”
“So, she knew you had a pierced ear?” Buffy asked.
“No. My ear was not pierced. I had it pierced so I could wear the earring.”
“She must have been special.”
“There’s something your not telling me. What was so special about this slayer?”
Giles looked down at the table as he said, “She was my daughter.”
Buffy almost jumped out of her seat. “Your daughter?” Giles nodded. “And the Council let you be her Watcher?”
“The Council never knew.” His voice softened as he continued. “I didn’t know until I’d been her Watcher for a few months.”
“Wow. Giles, I don’t know what to say. Who was her mother?”
“I met Grace during my Ripper days. We were both trying to escape our families. What I didn’t know was that her father was an influential member of the Watchers’ Council. We spent several weeks together before she began feeling guilty and left me to return to her family. I never knew she was pregnant.”
“Where is she now?”
“She died shortly after I become Emily’s Watcher.”
“Did you see her before she died?”
Giles nodded his head as he took off his glasses and laid them on the table. “When I became Emily’s Watcher, I felt a bond to her. We became close friends, and we confided in each other. One day she came to me in tears and told me that she had received a phone call from her grandfather. Her mother was ill, and they didn’t know how long she would live. She asked me to take her to see her mother. During the long trip to the hospital, she told me about her mother. When I asked about her father, she informed me that I was her father.”
Giles stood and turned away from Buffy. He didn’t want her to see him like this. “Emily insisted that I go in to see Grace alone before she joined us in the hospital room. Grace and I talked for a while before Emily joined us. Grace had wanted to tell me about Emily. At first she didn’t know how to contact me. Later she was afraid it would jeopardize my career. She never told anyone except Emily that I was her father.”
Giles heard Buffy get up from her chair and come to stand behind him. She didn’t say a word. She just laid her hand on his shoulder.
“Emily joined us in the hospital room and I left them alone for a while. When I returned an hour later, Grace had died. We stayed for the funeral before returning home.”
Giles wiped tears from his eyes before turning around to face Buffy again. “Soon after I found a prophecy that foretold Emily’s death, much like the prophecy involving you and the Master. I wasn’t convinced that it was a true prophecy. She believed it. She’d had dreams about it. I tried to prevent it to no avail. Emily died two months after her mother. When I was packing up her things, I found an envelope addressed to me. She had written me a letter explaining how she knew she would die and that she was happy she’d had a chance to get to know me. A pair of earrings was with the letter. They were a pair of earrings that I had given to Grace. She had given them to Emily, and Emily gave them to me. I have one stored away. The other I wear occasionally, to remember them.”
Giles started to turn away from Buffy, but she caught his arm. She pulled him into a tight hug. “I’m so sorry, Giles. I never knew. I shouldn’t have asked you about the earring.” She felt his arms wrap around her.
After a while he pulled away from her. “Buffy, I’m sorry. That was inappropriate.”
“Hey, I’m the one that hugged you. You looked like you needed it. So are you all better now?”
“I think so,” Giles answered through some sniffles.
“You ever think about having any more children?” Buffy asked suddenly.
“Maybe someday, but for now, I’ve got you.”
