Summary: The Gang goes on a road trip so that Buffy can see Riley in Iowa. Giles is along, of course, and stuff happens. :)
Disclaimer: Nothing here is mine. It all belongs in Joss, Mutant enemy, and lots and lots of other people, but not me. I’m just playing with them, I promise to put them back when I’m done
Authors note: This is my first B/G fic, so I hope it turns out well. Buffy is staying at Giles, platonically when it starts, just because I felt like it. Dawn isn’t in here.
Buffy was standing in the shower washing off the sweat and dust from patrolling. Giles had seen her come home safe, and chatted with her for a bit before going to bed, and now Buffy was fantasizing about his wonderful mouth kissing her. Since Riley had gone home to Iowa on vacation, she had been spending much more time with Giles than usual, and she was surprised at how it was affecting her. She had begun to notice things like how much he worried while she was on patrol, and how hard he worked to make sure she was happy. He had allowed her to move in when Willow decided to move in with Tara. He had even gone out to buy a couch that pulled out into a bed so that she would have some place to sleep.
She was suddenly interrupted from her musing by the ringing of the telephone. She grabbed her towel from the hook, wrapped in around herself, and ran to grab the phone before it woke up Giles. It was too late, she realized, as she heard in answering the phone. “Buffy,” he called “Riley is on the phone for you.”
“Thanks Giles,” she called back as she picked up the extension in the living room, “hi Riley,” she smiled into the phone, “how’s Iowa?”
“It’s great! I hadn’t realized how much I missed it. In fact, I’ve decided to stay a little longer.”
“Oh, umm, how much longer were you thinking?” Buffy asked.
“Probably another three weeks, my sister is pregnant and I’d really like to stay until she has her baby.”
“So, you, umm, won’t be back for our anniversary?” Buffy inquired, thinking of their 4 month anniversary that was coming up. She had been counting on a nice dinner, soft music, and making love with him for the first time. After her experience with Angel and Parker, she had been wary about sleeping with him, but had decided that their anniversary would be the perfect time to do it. Unfortunately, it seemed that he wouldn’t be there.
“Oh, shoot, that’s next week isn’t it. I forgot all about it. I’m sorry sweetheart, I won’t be there. But I’ll take you out to dinner when I get back as a late celebration. Listen, I have to go, I just wanted to tell you that I’ll be back later than planned. Love you,” he apologized as he hung up.
Buffy, was upset. Not only was he going to miss the anniversary she had planned, he hadn’t even remembered it. She didn’t love Riley, but she cared about him, and she tried to be a good girlfriend, whereas, he claimed to love her and couldn’t even remember their anniversary. She made up her bed and lay down, but couldn’t sleep because she couldn’t stop thinking about Riley. Giles wouldn’t forget an anniversary, she thought, and if he couldn’t make it home, I bet he would do something really sweet like send flowers, not just forget. Finally she managed to fall into a restless sleep.
“So he’s not going to be home for you big plans," Willow asked. Buffy had just poured out her problems with Riley to Willow, Tara, Xander, and Anya over mochas. “Did he know that you had plans for your anniversary?”
“No,” Buffy said, “But he didn’t even remember that it was our anniversary. Maybe he’s one of those guys who doesn’t think that you’re really dating unless you’re sleeping with him”
“Whoa, whoa, no images of sex with Riley, please,” Xander cried, covering his ears. “I really, don’t want to know about it, really, really, don’t want to know about it.”
“You don’t know that Buffy,” Tara added, “Guys are more forgetful about stuff like that. It doesn’t mean that he doesn’t care.”
“I guess not,” Buffy pouted, “It’s just that I had this big plan, and he wasn’t even thinking about it.”
“You wouldn’t believe how many guys I’ve cursed because they forgot important stuff,” Anya jumped in, “There was this one in Venice who his first wedding anniversary, and so I…”
Xander covered her mouth, “Anya, didn’t we agree, no more vengeance demon stories in public?”
“Well, fine, I just wanted Buffy to know that she not the only scorned woman.”
Willow interrupted, “I wouldn’t say that she is quite scorned, yet, just... um… HEY!!! I’ve got a great idea. You could go visit him!”
“I don’t exactly have the money for airfare Willow, and besides, I’d feel awkward with his family, I don’t know any of them, and we really aren’t that serious yet.”
“But we could all go. We could rent an RV, and make a road trip of it. It would be so much fun. We could do all sorts of bonding, and you would see Riley, and it would be great.”
“That’s not a bad idea,” Buffy smiled as she thought about it. “Willow, could find an RV to rent. Is everybody free for a couple of weeks?”
“I have a couple of weeks of vacation I could take,” Xander said, “How about you honey,” he asked turning to Anya. “Are you willing to leave work for a couple of weeks?”
Anya thought about it. “I guess I could, Willow and I could discuss expanding to an online store on the way, so that I won’t waste the time completely. Can we go now? Buffy’s problem is solved and I want to try out the new toys we got.”
Xander blushed bright red, “Um yeah, we could go, bye you guys,” He hollered to the girls over his shoulder.
Buffy, Tara, and Willow started giggling as the two walked out the door. Willow turned to Buffy, “So we need an RV for the five of us, right?”
‘Six actually,” Buffy corrected, “I’m hoping to convince Giles to go too.”
Willow asked, ‘Giles? You think he’d want to go?”
“Well, we’ve gotten a lot closer since I started living at his place, and I really don’t want him to feel abandoned. Do you know what, I’ll ask him now, and I’ll call you later. Bye!” Buffy left the café with a big smile on her face, thinking of all the time she would get to spend with Giles driving to Iowa. It didn’t occur to her that it was strange to be more excited about spending time with him than about getting to visit her boyfriend.
Tara turned to Willow, “Do you believe me now that they love each other?”
Willow was still shocked by the fact that Buffy thought right away to include Giles. Sure he was like a father to them, but it hadn’t even occurred to her to ask him to join them all on a cross-country drive. She had simply assumed that he probably wouldn’t want to go. “Sweetie, I think you just might be on to something.” She smiled, “I think that this trip would be the perfect place to make them ‘fess up about their feeling.” Tara returned her grin.
